Highly targeted traffic, consists of visitors who have already displayed a direct interest in the websites topic. The opposite of targeted traffic, would be a random visitor who may accidentally arrive at your site when they were actually looking for something completely different.
Explaining Targeted Traffic, and why it is so important!
A visitor to a website is only of any value if they are specifically interested in the topic your website covers. For instance, if your site is related to hybrid eco friendly cars, you only want visitors who are also interested in that exact topic. These are described as targeted visitors, and these are important because they are the visitors who are likely to convert in to sales.
To give a clear example of what targeted traffic is, please take a look at the following 4 categories of visitor:
- A visitor looking for cat food, who accidentally lands on your site is totally un-targeted and almost 100% certain not to make a purchase from your site.
- A person looking for cars, will be slightly more targeted, although this is still too broad a match to be classed as truly targeted traffic. They could in fact be looking for old, new, petrol, diesel, spare parts, racing, rally, or any other car related search term.
- Someone looking for fuel efficient cars, would be much more targeted, but still not 100%. They may possibly become interested in your exact topic once they see your site, but they did not come there specifically looking for what you are offering, and are therefore not fully targeted traffic.
- Anyone who is actively looking for hybrid eco friendly cars, is the perfect match, and therefore the most likely to convert in to a sale or other desirable act on your site. These are true targeted traffic visitors, and the exact kind of visitor you should be looking for.
The whole aim of every website is to get the visitor to take a desired action, be it make a purchase, join a membership, click adverts, subscribe, etc. For a site to convert the highest percentage of visitors, and therefore be effective, it is essential to get as much targeted traffic as possible.
